About Miami Beach:

The area known today as Miami Beach's humble beginning dates back to the late 19th Century: in the late 1890's the arrival of the railroad and the construction of a luxury hotel brought some significance to what was the original Miami, a small community of adventurous settlers, local Indians, and black Bahamians.

Miami Beach has seen cyclical ups and downs along its history, and each era has left its mark in the city. In 1913 Miami Beach was born, with the construction of a bridge across the bay. The city was incorporated in 1915, although in the early days there were just a few agricultural ventures, the area started getting attention from the airlines during the Depression years, it became a destination for international flights from South America and the Caribbean, Miami became known in those days as "The Gateway to the Americas".

Entrepreneurs started building small hotels along the beach in what is today South Beach, in the the modern Art Deco style of those days, fueling the real estate bonanza of the period that eased the hardships brought about by the Depression.

The population and real estate development continued to grow at a steady pace during the 1940's and 50's, but the Cuban revolution of 1959 brought the great shock to the area: thousands of Cubans fled to Miami and Miami Beach, bringing a burning desire to rebuild their lives and prosper. The Cuban exiles propelled the rapid development of the city during the sixties and seventies, changing Miami into an economic engine of the region.

Miami Beach in the early eighties was somehow lagging behind: most areas were in lack of repair, and an air of neglect was everywhere: the real estate market was depressed. Crime rate was high, many buildings were vacant, and drug trafficking was rampant. The TV show Miami Vice put the spotlight on Miami Beach, generating interest in the unique atmosphere of the area, and about the same time investment capital started showing interest in the Beach real estate.

The next decade saw Miami Beach reborn, it became a magnet for tourists, real estate and business investors, celebrities. The infrastructure of the area was greatly improved, the Art Deco buildings were renovated to its former splendor, many new hotels and apartment buildings were built. In 1979 Miami Beach's Art Deco Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (for more information about the architecture in Miami Beach, visit the site of the Miami Design Preservation League)

Miami Beach became the choice for fashion shoots and movie making, and the splendid beach in a tropical weather, the blend of Latin cultures, make the area unique and fascinating. Miami Beach's real estate market has enjoyed years of splendor, and looks ahead for more prosperous times.
