About Coral Gables:

Visiting Coral Gables today, a very strong Mediterranean flavor is noticed immediately. Coral Gables was one of the first planned communities, anticipating the concept of real estate in "gated communities". It was at one point notorious for its aesthetic regulations, which are even more strict today, one of the reasons real estate values have remained vey high.

Coral Gables was developed by George Merrick in the 1920s, a land developer also responsible for founding the University of Miami, and the Biltmore Hotel, one of Coral Gables' landmarks. Merrick was inspired by the Garden City and City Beautiful movements of the 19th and early 20th century, creating in 1925 one of America's first fully-planned communities.

Coral Gables' downtown commercial district was designed to be only four blocks wide and more than two miles long. The area was once serviced by a free trolley system that ran down Ponce de Leon Boulevard, the main artery dissecting the business district, and every business in Coral Gables was less than a two block walk. The old trolley system was replaced by the popularity of modern automobiles until a new free trolley system was initiated in November, 2003. Today, Coral Gables is known as a pedestrian-friendly destination. Located only four miles from Miami International Airport, the "City Beautiful" boasts more than 140 dining establishments and gourmet shops, plus many notable international retailers.

Simultaneous to the foundation of Coral Gables, the city was selected as the home to the University of Miami, which was constructed in 1925 on 240 acres of land approximately two miles south of downtown Coral Gables. The University of Miami is today a world-class university, ranked among the top tier of U.S. colleges and universities.

Coral Gables also proudly boasts The Biltmore Hotel, a National Historic Landmark resort featuring luxury accommodations and 76,000 sq. ft. of meeting - function space. Other highlights include an 18-hole, Donald Ross-designed championship golf course, 10 lighted tennis courts, newly renovated spa, full service fitness center, an array of fine restaurants and bars including the award-winning Palme d’Or, private wine cellar club, and the largest hotel swimming pool in the continental United States.
